Tucked along Shinmachi-dori, a short walk from Shijo-Karasuma, Kyoto Inban Honten feels like a small reset button in the middle of the city. Step past the lattice frontage and the pace softens—there’s that unmistakable Kyoto hush, plus the simple pleasure of following a gentle fragrance as you browse. It’s the kind of stop that pairs well with wandering: drop in between temples, coffee breaks, and side streets, and you’ll leave with a scent that becomes part of your trip’s memories. The surrounding Shijo area is full of charming detours, making this an easy, satisfying add-on.

Maximum 4 participants per group.
Join a Kyoto seal artisan in a calm, intimate setting to create a one-of-a-kind Japanese name seal of your own. This is a special and unique cultural experience.
During the approximately 90-minute workshop, you will first learn about the history and meaning of Japanese seals, which have long been used as a person’s official signature. The artisan will then carefully propose meaningful kanji characters based on your name, creating a personalized Japanese name just for you. After selecting the characters, you will write them yourself. Your writing will be digitally scanned and used to produce an authentic seal using a professional engraving machine.
While your seal is being engraved, you will also try hand-carving with real carving tools, allowing you to experience the traditional techniques of Kyoto seal craftsmanship. Once the seal is complete, you will perform your first stamping — a meaningful moment that becomes your “official Japanese signature.”
Your finished seal will be presented in a beautiful paulownia wood box to take home. To celebrate its completion, you will enjoy bancha tea and dorayaki, offering a taste of Kyoto-style hospitality.
This experience is personally guided by a Kyoto seal artisan and is limited to small groups. Quiet, authentic, and memorable, it offers a truly meaningful encounter with Japanese culture.
